About Our Residential Treatment Program

Sometimes the symptoms of a mental health concern may not be intense enough to warrant inpatient care, but they are keeping a child from functioning in their daily life. When this happens, the child may benefit from longer-term care.

Lakeland Behavioral Health System offers a residential treatment program for children and adolescents ages 7-17 who are struggling with mental health concerns. Many of the children we support have also suffered abuse or been exposed to conflicts within their families.

Live-in care at our facility in Springfield, Missouri, offers your child the chance to step away from the stressors of daily life and focus on the healing process. During their stay, they will receive round-the-clock care from a compassionate team who genuinely cares about your child’s success.

Every child’s length of stay varies depending on their individual progress, but most children take part in our residential program for about three to six months. We will evaluate your child’s progress to determine the best time for them to transition safely home or to a lower level of care.

Care Experience

At Lakeland Behavioral Health System, we recognize that mental health disorders affect young people differently than they do adults. The experts at our Springfield, Missouri, facility designed our residential treatment programming to reflect those differences using developmentally appropriate therapies and methods.

We based the programming we provide at this level of care on the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) using a trauma-informed approach. Group therapy is foundational to the care we provide in this program, with discussions covering topics such as developing healthy coping skills, anger management, forgiveness and acceptance, and creative expression.

We also offer different experiential therapies, such as music therapy, animal-assisted therapy, art therapy, and various recreational therapies, along with individual therapy, family therapy, medication management services, and basic medical care.

Every child who receives care through our residential treatment program follows a plan that we custom-build to their unique circumstances.

Education Program

Your child shouldn’t have to put their education on hold while they get professional support for a behavioral health condition. At Lakeland Behavioral Health System, we will ensure that your child doesn’t lose academic progress while they take part in our residential program.

To accomplish this, we offer Lakeland Regional School on our Springfield, Missouri, campus. This school has earned national accreditation and is fully staffed by educators who are professionally certified through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Your child will receive instruction in the core subjects of math, English, science, and social studies and take part in physical education classes. Toward the end of their residential stay, they will receive an exit assessment to evaluate their progress.

Admissions Process

We recognize how overwhelming it can be to reach out for help when your child is struggling with a behavioral health concern. The compassionate team at Lakeland Behavioral Health System has made the admissions process as efficient as possible so that you can focus on what matters most: your child’s healing process.

To get started, call our residential admissions department. One of our residential admissions specialists will conduct an initial assessment, during which they will gather documentation regarding any previous treatment your child may have had. They will also ask questions about your child’s psychosocial history, medical and physical health, education level, and any recent educational testing.

If we determine that the residential program at our Springfield, Missouri, facility is the best fit for your child, a knowledgeable member of our team will walk you through the rest of the admissions process. This may include gathering additional documents and verifying your insurance benefits.

If your child is suffering from a mental health concern, the impact can be felt across every aspect of their life. But with the support of the experts at Lakeland Behavioral Health System, they can rediscover hope for a better tomorrow.
