Leading Children’s & Adolescent Mental Health Treatment in Missouri

Learn More About Our Children’s Mental Health Services

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Facility with Age-Appropriate Programming

At Lakeland, we believe that children’s mental health services should be age-appropriate and tailored to their specific developmental levels. Children and adolescents go through multiple stages of emotional and social development in a few short years, and effective mental health treatment considers their unique needs. Every therapy that is provided at our children’s mental health hospital contains relevant content that is appropriate for them.

When children and adolescent mental health treatment is catered to the developmental needs of those who are struggling, young people are more likely to participate in treatment, discuss their emotions more openly with peers and counselors, and navigate future mental health challenges with confidence. Our child and adolescent mental health services can offer patients the opportunity to learn essential life skills and grow in emotional intelligence and resilience. We continue to support them as they embrace life after treatment.

We are able to provide age-appropriate programming for children and adolescents who have the following mental health disorders:

  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)
  • Schizophrenia
  • Schizoaffective disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Co-occurring substance use disorders

We are also able to provide stabilization and treatment for children and adolescents who are struggling with suicidal ideation, self-harming behaviors, and the effects of trauma.

Upon admission, patients are assigned an individual therapist whom they meet with regularly as they progress through treatment. Children also attend a minimum of three group therapy sessions each day. These groups can provide valuable social interaction, and therapists guide participants in therapeutic discussions on age-appropriate topics such as self-image, anger management, and healthy coping skills.

In addition to regular individual and group therapy, children and adolescents can benefit from recreation therapy and art, music, and pet therapies. These therapies are guided by trained professionals and can offer opportunities for children to have fun and grow in wellness alongside their peers.

Levels of Care Offered at Our Children’s Treatment Center

Continuing Care After an Adolescent Mental Health Treatment Center

At Lakeland Behavioral Health System, we believe that it is important to support our patients’ ongoing healing even after treatment is complete. We provide a supportive continuation of care for each child or adolescent, whether they transition back to their home environment or move to another adolescent mental health treatment center. Our clinical team that provides treatment at our children’s mental health hospital diligently assesses each child’s individual response to treatment to determine the appropriate timing for discharge. Throughout the treatment journey, we encourage patients and their families to actively participate in every element of care. Their involvement plays a crucial role in promoting positive and lasting outcomes.

However, our commitment to quality patient care does not end at discharge. We work closely with each individual patient and their family to determine which outpatient services will help support their continued growth and well-being. This might include enrollment in an outpatient treatment program, support groups, counseling, and medication management services. These continuing care services can reinforce the progress made during the inpatient or residential phase and support long-term healing.

Many of our patients have faced significant challenges in their lives, and some have had unsuccessful treatment experiences in the past. Our programming can allow these children and adolescents to make crucial strides toward healthier futures.
